Greater Aweil Community in Wau Calls for Peace, Unity, and Responsible Social Media Use

The chairperson of the Greater Aweil Community in Western Bahr El Ghazal, Mr. Arkangelo Majak Ayat, has issued a public appeal calling for peace, reconciliation, and unity among its members and with the national leadership of South Sudan.

In a statement extended to the media and addressed to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the chairperson reaffirmed the community’s loyalty to the Republic of South Sudan and expressed support for the country’s legitimate leadership. The appeal urged all sons and daughters of Aweil to prioritize national interest over personal or political differences and to embrace practical peace and coexistence.

The community leadership cautioned against the misuse of social media, warning that insults, provocation, and attacks on leaders contribute to division and weaken social cohesion. Elders, youth, men, and women were urged to promote respect for leadership institutions and uphold community values.

The statement further called on community members across the Bahr el Ghazal states to separate political disagreements from community affairs, stressing that the Greater Aweil Community should not be drawn into political disputes or misrepresented through irresponsible public statements.

According to the leadership, legal action may be taken against individuals who insult the community or misuse the name and image of Aweil in ways that damage its reputation. Neighboring communities, including were also encouraged to take responsible measures—particularly on social media—to safeguard unity, dignity, and peaceful coexistence.

The community praised President Salva Kiir as a patient and wise leader who prioritizes peace, stability, and national unity over public pressure, noting that leadership authority is divinely ordained.
