Greater Aweil Community in Wau Appeals to President Kiir for Unity and Reconciliation Among Bahr el Ghazal Leaders

The Greater Aweil Community in Western Bahr el Ghazal State has issued a public appeal to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, calling for peace, unity, and reconciliation among senior leaders from the Bahr el Ghazal region.

In a statement addressed to the President, the community reaffirmed its loyalty to the Republic of South Sudan and its legitimate leadership, emphasizing the need for harmony among brothers who share a common history and homeland.

The appeal specifically mentioned President Salva Kiir Mayardit, former Vice President Dr. Benyamin Bol Mel, former National Security Service Director General Gen. Akol Koor Kuc, Hon. Nhial Deng Nhial, and Gen. Paul Malong Awan, describing them as brothers whose unity is essential for national stability.

Citing a Dinka proverb, the community warned that brothers who fail to unite against common challenges risk being weakened by division, stressing that strength lies in unity rather than conflict.

Rooted in Dinka cultural values and the philosophy of Kong Koc, the statement underscored that reconciliation begins within families and communities and should be achieved through dialogue, truth, forgiveness, and mutual respect.

The community called upon chiefs, elders, religious leaders, youth and women associations, intellectuals, and civil society to actively support dialogue and reconciliation efforts among the leaders.

According to the statement, unity among national leaders would promote peace at the grassroots level and help heal a country that has endured years of conflict and division.

As a way forward, the community proposed private dialogue facilitated by respected elders, community-led peace forums grounded in cultural wisdom, and public commitments to forgiveness and shared national responsibility.

The Greater Aweil Community expressed hope that the leaders would one day sit together as brothers for the sake of peace, national unity, and the future of South Sudan’s children.

The statement clarified that the appeal is a home-grown, community-led peace initiative, not affiliated with the government or any political party, and driven purely by moral and cultural values.

The appeal was signed by Arkangda Majak Aya, Chairperson of the Greater Afeit Community, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Wau.
