Executive Director of Empower Youths Africa Calls for peace in Northern Jonglei

Garang Athian Deng, a member of civil society groups, and Executive Director of Empower Youths Africa has urged community leaders to take the lead in promoting peace as tensions rise in Northern Jonglei.

Garang issued the statement on Thursday following rising tensions and reported violence in parts of Jonglei, particularly in Pajut and surrounding areas, where clashes have heightened fear among civilians.

Garang urged civil society actors, religious leaders, women’s groups, and youth organizations to reject violence and focus on unity. “This is a tragic moment for our communities,” he said. “We must stand for peace and stop pushing our people toward war.”

He emphasized dialogue and restraint, especially among the youth. “Our responsibility is to guide young people away from violence and toward peaceful solutions,” Athian added.

He further called for collective action to calm tensions, protect civilians, and prevent further bloodshed, noting that stability can only be achieved through cooperation and a commitment to non-violence.
